2023 ARTIST STATEMENT:
These 'Femmes Futuristes' are viewed as if with x-ray vision. Their patchwork interiors hint at what they have lived, their silhouettes offer clues as to how they have proceeded through time. Pieced together from fragments of our shared visual history and placed in settings from my photographic archive, they inspire new possibilities.
Regardless of how we identify, many of us are, all too often, susceptible to self-doubt, insecurities, and inhibitions. With this work, I hope to inspire a jettisoning of such limitations, and a transformation of the self, where qualities and attitudes are chosen freely, independent of societal norms and pressures.
To create these works, I search through today’s plethora of ephemeral printed matter, selecting bits and pieces, then constructing figures whose gestures embody a sense of power and self-determination. Finally, I situate the figures in open-ended venues where they can define their own narratives.
The 'Femmes Futuristes' point toward new opportunities, and inspire bold authenticity and a sense of adventure. May we all move forward with them, piecing together the best fragments of our personal histories and living our lives with flair and without apology.
