Hayun Surl earned his B.S. in Interior Design from Hansung University in Seoul, Korea. He earned an M.F.A. from Ohio University (Athens, OH). Select solo exhibitions include "Guardians, Vessels, and Landscapes" at Victoria College Art Gallery (Victoria, TX) and "Recollection" at the Mayer Museum (San Angelo, TX). From January 10 - March 14, 2026, Surl's work was featured in the group exhibition "The Uncanny In-Between" at the University of Houston’s Blaffer Art Museum (Houston, TX). https://blafferartmuseum.org/uncanny-in-between/
In May 2025, he was a participant in the Marfa Invitational group exhibition (Marfa, TX). Surl has an upcoming 2026 residency at Belger Art Center (Kansas City, MO) and a summer 2025 residency at the Red Lodge Clay Center (Red Lodge, MT); he had a 2024 residency at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts (Portland, ME). He is currently an Assistant Professor at Angelo State University (San Angelo, TX).
2026 Artist Statement: I’m on a journey of rediscovery, wandering through distant places and reconnecting with those I once called home. At times, it feels like a dream. The textures and contours of the landscapes linger, guiding me as I weave my story. I drift, gently reshaped by memories along the way.
