In the Spring of 2022, Lauren Salazar started a weekly project in which she made one 8 x 10” piece each week as a way to work through ideas more quickly in the practice of weaving, which can be painstakingly slow, and in her lifestyle—in motherhood—which can make creative time limited. After 52 weeks, the project morphed from an idea-sparking practice to finished pieces that can stand on their own as framed woven abstractions.
“Tethered” contemplates the ties between painting, sculpture, and craft; between vintage and contemporary practices and materials; and between domestic and professional roles. Abstract three-dimensional paintings are made using industrial ropes, textiles, and hand-weaving. In their creation, Salazar not only asserts weaving’s rightful position in contemporary art but also evaluates her own reality as an artist, mother, and homemaker.
