"Topographies of a Place to Know"

Hooks-Epstein Galleries proudly presents an exhibition of mixed media work by Venezuelan American artist, Lorena Morales. "Topographies of a Place to Know" will open on Saturday, April 13, 2024; a Reception for the Artist will take place from 5:00-7:00PM. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, May 11, 2024.

Lorena Morales presents new works that belong to the series "Topographies of a Place to Know", which she started in 2019 while living as an expat in Soyo, Angola. To better understand her surroundings and the context of her location, she searched for detailed city and area maps, to no avail. As a result of her frustration, Morales began creating her own maps, and the series was born. "Topographies of a Place to Know" is a series of imaginary, emotional, and psychological maps that relate to the perception of home and the persistence of memory; these concepts are an overarching theme throughout her current work. Morales continues her cogitation over identity and the evolving nature of home as memories, circumstances, spaces, and perceptions change.
