Hooks-Epstein Galleries proudly presents new drawings by Houston-based, longtime Hooks-Epstein Galleries artist, Mark Greenwalt. The exhibition, "I Spot Eye Spots", will open on Saturday, January 20, 2024; the Opening Reception will take place from 5:00PM–7:00PM. We hope you will join us! Mark Greenwalt | 2024 Artist Statement
I draw on surfaces pregnant with evolutionary potential. There, anomalous figures emerge as pictorial constructs in fictive spaces, drawn to the surface by the sound of the pencil in my hand. Thus formed, such figures challenge canons of proportion underlying historic ideals of beauty and question societal notions about depictions of monstrousness. These drawings serve as objects of meditation about the nature of suffering and the enduring human spirit.
