The works of Angel Castelán depict a series of ordinary moments that could be a snapshot into anyone’s daily life. However, looking further in depth, the work is a dialogue in itself, which speaks on identity and personal relationships. Castelán sources his own life as reference material for the pieces that he creates. He depicts the authenticity and vulnerability of intimate interactions that are reserved for private moments or settings and are unconstrained by cultural and societal influences.
Born and raised in Houston, TX, Castelán is an interdisciplinary artist who works in painting, drawing, and relief printmaking. Castelán earned both his BFA (Painting), with a minor in Art History, and his MFA (Painting) from the University of Houston. Castelán has shown his work throughout Texas, including the Houston Holocaust Museum, the Blaffer Art Museum, Lawndale Art Center, and Clamplight Gallery. He is currently a professor at Houston Community College and Sam Houston State University. Castelán currently works and lives in Houston, TX.
