In recent works, Desira Garcia explores the lost connection between the individuals of today’s society with each other—as well as with the natural world—as a result of digital advances and social media. In her paintings, the patterns of lines and colors are symbolic of the digital language, which disrupt the organic forms depicting cells, veins, and metamorphic phases that are representative of the formation of larger living organisms. As Garcia explores this interaction in her work, she asks, “How will this alter us in the future? Will this eventually interrupt the natural order of things?” In previous pieces, she uses her background in graphic design and print and her deep interest in textile design and pattern work as her inspiration. Tradition plays a major role in textile design, and special attention is devoted to the items that are used for ceremonies, festivals, and to record history. Desira Garcia received her AAS in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Houston in 2006 and her BFA from the University of Houston in 2014. Garcia has been in a number of group exhibitions in Houston, where she currently resides.
